Climate Action at New West Public Library
On Nov 2-8, 2024, libraries in BC celebrate Climate Action Week. This is a time when each library can plan programs or displays to raise awareness about climate change and solutions. At the New Westminster Public Library, we have organized a whole week of events which are a great opportunity for residents to engage with the topic in a constructive and hopeful way. All programs are visible here: www.nwpl.ca/climate
Climate Solutions in a Day, on November 2. Local climate educators will provide an overview of the climate science, and engage participants in how to put climate solutions into practice in their homes, their communities and through advocacy. City staff from the Climate Action department will be on hand, as well as city councilors. We want residents to really feel like they are able to have their voices heard and engage with the politicians and bureaucrats who can effectuate larger-scale change. This program is a full-day commitment, but lunch is provided!
Also to note, most of the events are open to teenagers, including the above course. We really want to encourage intergenerational dialogue and have youth voices present. There is also a mending workshop that teens might like, and a workshop in information literacy (climate mis- and disinformation) that would be great resources for kids learning how to navigate intentional misinformation.
We also have a family-friendly movie night where we will screen the film 2040, a hopeful visual letter from the filmmaker to his young daughter, imagining a climate future where we implement the solutions that exist today. We’ll have popcorn and participants can bring their own bowl!
All programs are free, and we look forward to welcoming folks to the library for Climate Action Week 2024.
